Ahmet Dirican: PTEN Loss Becomes a Therapeutic Target in Prostate Cancer

Ahmet Dirican, Professor of Medical Oncology at Medicana International İzmir Hospital, shared a post on X:

”For years, PTEN loss told us which patients would do worse.

Now it may help us identify who can do better.
FDA approves capivasertib + abiraterone + prednisone for PTEN-deficient metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer.

What have we learned?

  • We learned that not all prostate cancers are biologically the same.
  • We learned that PTEN loss defines a distinct and more aggressive disease subtype.
  • And now we learn that this biology can be targeted.

In CAPItello-281, capivasertib improved radiographic PFS by approximately 7.5 months and reduced the risk of progression or death by 19%.

PTEN has moved from being a prognostic biomarker to a therapeutic target. That is how precision oncology changes practice.”
