Agata Jakoncic: Building a More Comprehensive Approach to Women’s Cancer Care

Agata Jakoncic, Managing Director at MSD Greece, Cyprus and Malta, shared a post on LinkedIn:

A cancer diagnosis changes everything. But for women, the burden often extends far beyond the disease itself affecting her social roles as a caregiver and as a worker.

Yesterday, the Institute of Health Economics presented the new study on ‘Women and Cancer’, supported by MSD Greece. The discussion brought together patient representatives and healthcare stakeholders around a critical issue for women’s health: the need to look beyond universal healthcare coverage.

The study highlights that the full burden women face when living with cancer is not always addressed, including caregiving responsibilities, income loss and other indirect costs. These challenges often compound and increase vulnerability.

Congratulations to the authors Vasiliki Tsiantou, Eleftheria Karabli, Panagiota Naoum, Ilias Kyriopoulos, and Kostas Athanasakis, for offering s a structured set of proposals for a more gender-sensitive and holistic approach to cancer care.

At MSD, we are proud to advocate for:

  • Holistic policies for women’s health
  • A National Cancer Plan that also addresses the specific needs of women with cancer
  • The strategic use of health data
  • Cross-sector collaboration and policy actions
  • Safe and supportive workplaces for women affected by cancer

Supporting women with cancer is not only about helping them survive – it is about helping them continue to live and live better lives. It is about ensuring they receive the psychological support and a workplace they need. Together, we can build a healthcare system that responds to the person as a whole , not just the disease.”
