Adorbu Baridakara: The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness and Early Detection

Adorbu Baridakara, Manager at Acetrea Cancer Advocacy Network, shared on LinkedIn:

“She deserves a chance! Early detection can make a difference.

What if the simple decision to pay attention to your breast health today could help save your life tomorrow?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a time to raise awareness, break the silence, challenge the stigma, and encourage everyone to take breast health seriously.

Breast cancer does not discriminate. It can affect women of different ages and backgrounds, and in rare cases, men too. That is why awareness must go beyond pink ribbons; it must inspire action.

Here are 3 important steps to take:

  • Know your breasts: Become familiar with their usual appearance and feel.
  • Recognise the warning signs: Look out for a new lump, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple changes, or unusual discharge.
  • Seek medical attention early: Report unusual changes promptly. Do not wait for pain before seeking help, and remember that most breast lumps are not cancerous.

Breast self-awareness is important, but it does not replace recommended screening. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional about the screening options appropriate for your age and risk level.

As a nurse and health advocate, I believe that awareness without action is incomplete. Let us encourage open conversations, promote access to screening, and support every person affected by breast cancer with compassion and dignity.

This October, don’t just wear pink. Speak up. Share knowledge. Encourage screening. Take action!

Someone in your circle may need this reminder today. Share this message and help spread hope, knowledge, and the importance of early detection.

Together, we can make a difference.”
