1 Nurse. 45 Children. The Reality of Pediatric Cancer Care in LMICs – ACT 4 Children

ACT 4 Children shares a post on LinkedIn:

“Nurses in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face several challenges when treating kids with cancer. One of the main issues is the availability of trained nurses.

While the International Society of Paediatric Oncology – SIOP recommended baseline nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5 for pediatric oncology units, LMICs encounter staffing shortages that push this number way out of reach.

Uganda has reported a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:15 during the day and 1:45 at night (source). Because of this shortage of nurses in under-resourced settings, too many children with cancer lack access to the care and attention they need, resulting in preventable loss of life.

Treatments get missed, follow-ups are cancelled, infections get worse.

That’s why ACT 4 Children is collaborating across the healthcare industry and medical community along with nonprofits and support networks to train more nurses in LMICs so that every child receives the highest quality care.

Follow us if you too believe that every child should receive the same quality of care, no matter where they live.”
