“Publication Alert!
Can We Make Molecular Biomarker Reports Truly Provider-Friendly? A New Consensus Approach
- Even as next-generation sequencing (NGS) becomes widely accessible, many oncology patients still miss out on timely molecular testing. One major reason?
- The reports are complex—and often not designed for busy clinicians who have minutes to make critical decisions.
- To address this gap, the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) convened a multidisciplinary working group of oncologists, molecular pathologists, and diagnostics experts to create something the field has needed for years:
- A provider-friendly, guideline-concordant NGS biomarker reporting template.
Here’s what the team did:
- Reviewed 17 NSCLC NGS reports across academic, private, and commercial labs
- Assessed elements such as report length, visual aids, information hierarchy, variant interpretation clarity, and use of tables/figures
- Integrated stakeholder input, published guidelines, and expert consensus
- Developed an optimized reporting structure that is now freely available online
Goal:
- A standardized, intuitive biomarker report can reduce cognitive load, improve decision-making efficiency, and ultimately enhance patient care—especially in community settings where molecular expertise is limited.
- This work represents an important step toward closing the interpretation gap and ensuring more patients receive the targeted therapies and clinical trials they qualify for.
- If you’re involved in oncology diagnostics, molecular pathology, medical affairs, or clinical operations, this template is worth reviewing.
Curious to see how we can bring more clarity and consistency to molecular reporting? Let’s talk.”
