Achieck Njeck: Where You Live Should Not Determine Your Chance of Surviving Cancer

Achieck Njeck, Student Nurse, Clinical Nrainee at Bamenda Regional Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Should a person’s chance of surviving cancer depend on where they live?

Today, I came across a thought provoking reflection from Dr. Ivo Talah Azeh that deeply resonated with me and the mission of Vanguard Oncology Network (VON).

One of the most uncomfortable truths in global health today is that cancer survival is often determined not just by biology, but by geography.

A patient diagnosed with cancer in a high-income country may have access to early detection, advanced diagnostics, specialized oncology teams, and life-saving treatments. Meanwhile, many patients in low- and middle-income countries face delayed diagnoses, limited treatment options, financial hardship, and preventable deaths.

The tragedy is that many of these lives could be saved. The science exists. The treatments exist. The knowledge exists. What remains unequal is access.

As Dr. Ivo highlighted, the most urgent question is not simply, ‘What is the next breakthrough?’ but rather, ‘How do we ensure the breakthroughs we already have reach the patients who need them most?

This question lies at the heart of why VON exists.

At Vanguard Oncology Network (VON), we are committed to advancing cancer awareness, education, early detection, advocacy, and equitable access to cancer care. We believe that where a person is born, lives, or earns should never determine their chance of surviving cancer.

The future of cancer control will not be measured only by the medicines we discover, but by how many lives we are able to reach.

A special appreciation to Dr. Ivo Talah Azeh for highlighting this critical global health challenge and inspiring important conversations around cancer equity and access.”
