Aaron Sverdlov, Co-Director of the Newcastle Centre of Excellence in Cardio-Oncology at Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), shared a post by Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand on LinkedIn, adding:
“I would like to congratulate Dr Alpa Gupta on winning the NSW State prize for her case presentation as well as the other finalists: Dr Bernard Chan and Dr Tim Kwan.
Thank you, Ravinay Bhindi and Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand for the invitation to deliver the keynote on CardioOncology – how we can best improve cardiovascular health of people living with and beyond cancer.
Highlighting these key messages:
- Rising cancer survival is accompanied by a substantial increase in cardiovascular disease among survivors.
- Cardio-oncology aims to enable optimal cancer therapy while protecting the heart through early risk stratification, surveillance and timely treatment.
- Cardiotoxicity is far more than just heart failure, and often sits on a background of under-recognised and undertreated CV risk.
- Modern tools – from risk scores and GLS/MRI to AI-enabled ECG and “permissive cardiotoxicity” approaches – are helping personalise care and keep patients on life-saving cancer treatment.
- Future work will focus on dual cardioprotective/anticancer strategies and reducing inequities, especially for older, frail and regional patients.
It’s all about working together across specialties cardiology oncology radiation oncology haematology in multidisciplinary teams with nurses and all allied health professionals to improve patient outcomes!”
