What will shape health and medical science over the next decade?

At this year’s AAHMS Annual Meeting, Scanning Horizons: Science, Health and the Decade Ahead, we will bring together some of the leading voices from Australia and the world in health, medicine, research, policy and global health to examine the trends, technologies and societal shifts already shaping the decade ahead.

Australia’s health and medical research sector is entering a period of profound change. New technologies are moving quickly from promise to practice. Global health priorities are shifting. Geopolitical disruption is changing the conditions for research collaboration.

This is a meeting for anyone who wants to understand where health and medical science is heading, what Australia needs to prepare for, and how our sector can help shape the future rather than simply respond to it. Across two days the AAHMS Annual Meeting will showcase some of the emerging science set to shape the future of health and medicine, including panel discussions and a series of focused expert talks.

Thursday 22 – Friday 23 October 2026
UNSW, Kensington, Sydney, NSW
Registration.

This year’s program features an exceptional line-up of speakers, including:

  • Sir Jeremy Farrar OBE FRS FMedSci, Assistant Director-General, Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Care at the World Health Organization, will deliver the keynote address, offering a WHO perspective on preparing for the future. Drawing on his global leadership across health research, pandemic preparedness and international health policy, Sir Jeremy will help set the frame for a meeting focused on foresight, readiness and the future role of health and medical science in an uncertain world.
  • Professor Seye Abimbola, from the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney, whose work examines learning and governance in health systems, knowledge practices, and epistemic injustice in global health. Professor Abimbola will join a discussion panel exploring “Whose future are we planning for? Equity and inclusion in horizon-scanning”, bringing a critical lens to questions of justice, power and whose knowledge shapes the future health research agenda.
  • Professor Gail Matthews FAHMS, Head of the Therapeutic Vaccine and Research Program at the Kirby Institute, UNSW, who brings deep expertise in HIV, viral hepatitis, therapeutic clinical trials and global respiratory infection research. Professor Matthews will join a discussion on “Research in a changing world: How geopolitical shifts are reshaping health research in practice”, explore how international collaboration, clinical research and preparedness are being shaped by a changing global environment.
