Randall Kimple Highlights the Teamwork Behind Cancer Research

Randall Kimple, Professor of Radiation Oncology and Chairperson at University of Rochester Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:

“Some of the most important work in cancer care happens quietly, and I want to say thank you to the people doing it.

Clinical trials are how treatment gets better.

They’re also a lot of detail work: research coordinators who keep studies running day to day, data managers who make sure every record is right, regulatory staff who navigate the paperwork, research nurses who care for participants, and the investigators who tie it all together.

When it works, most people never see any of it.

I’ve worked at NCI-designated Cancer Centers my entire career and understand the team required to move research forward.

Colleagues design the studies, but usually not without the input of other faculty, residents, and medical students.

My favorite studies start in a lab with a novel discovery and try to determine whether that ‘thing’ might work to improve the lives of our patients.

In the end it takes a large team to turn those findings and questions into studies that can help the next person who walks through the door.

To the research teams at Wilmot Cancer Institute and University of Rochester Medicine: thank you for your patience, your precision, and your commitment to doing this right.

If you’re a colleague who’s part of a trial team, what’s one thing you wish more people understood about your work?”
