“You return home, to the same place you left, but something in you has changed. The city is still there, the streets are the same, but you are no longer quite the same person who left. You have seen different realities, heard different voices, and learned new ways of looking at challenges that are also our own.
Last week, I had the opportunity to join our annual City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) meeting in Madrid. It was a chance to pause, reflect on how far we have come, and, above all, reconnect with what drives our work.
At C/Can, we believe that where a person lives or who they are should not determine the quality of cancer care they receive. Results can give us satisfaction, but it is what drives us that gives our work meaning.
We also looked ahead: how can we continue strengthening cities and demonstrating that transforming cancer care from the ground up, is not simply a statement, but something tangible, measurable, and sustainable?
Perhaps finding our place in the world means finding a way to put our talents at the service of something that matters. To build something that did not exist yesterday. Not for ourselves, but for those who need it most.
Because transforming health systems requires evidence, planning, collaboration, execution, measurement, and perseverance. But before all of that, it requires believing that change is possible and having the courage and commitment to try.
