“World Cancer Day at Jijiga – A Day of Learning, Service & Solidarity.
On this year’s World Cancer Day, the Ethiopian Medical Students Association – Jijiga Branch organized a remarkable event at the Oncology Unit of JJU Sheik Hassen Yabare Referral Hospital.
The program began with a warm introduction by the President of EMSA – Jijiga Kamil Ismail and the student leadership team, setting the tone for a day centered on awareness, advocacy, and action.
I had the honor, together with Dr.Mohamed Abdirahman, to lead a presentation and panel discussion focusing on:
- The growing cancer burden in Eastern Ethiopia
- Late-stage presentations and existing challenges
- Available oncology services in the region
- The urgent need for awareness, early detection, and system strengthening
The discussion was dynamic and engaging, followed by a thoughtful Q&A session where students demonstrated genuine curiosity and commitment toward improving cancer care in our community.
The program continued with:
- Certificate awards
- A guided visit to the Oncology Unit
- Psychosocial support sessions for patients
- And finally, a beautiful Ethiopian traditional coffee ceremony prepared by the students in appreciation of the oncology unit staff, a true symbol of respect, culture, and unity.
What stood out most was the passion and professionalism of the medical students. Their initiative reflects a generation that understands cancer is not only a medical challenge but also a social responsibility.
My heartfelt gratitude to the EMSA – Jijiga team for organizing such a meaningful program, and special thanks to Dr. Mohammed for the insightful collaboration and commitment to advancing oncology care in Eastern Ethiopia.
Together, through awareness, education, and compassion — we are changing the scopes of cancer care in Eastern Ethiopia!!!”
