Yan Leyfman: The Space Between Facts and Fear

Yan Leyfman, Medical Oncologist, Co-Founder and Executive Director of MedNews Week, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“There are moments in oncology when the room becomes very quiet.

When the scan is no longer just an image. When statistics stop sounding like numbers. When a patient looks at you – not for data – but for steadiness.

And suddenly, even the richest medical language feels small.

In this month’s Oncology, I wrote about that space – the space between facts and fear. About how sitting down instead of standing, pausing instead of explaining, staying instead of rushing can mean more than any perfectly delivered plan.

We train for years to master the science. No one formally teaches us how to hold silence when someone’s world just changed.

But that may be what patients remember most.

Grateful to Cancer Network for the opportunity to share something more personal.

If you’ve ever sat on either side of the exam room, I hope this resonates.”
