Training Tomorrow’s Paediatric Oncology Leaders in Africa

On International Day of Education, we celebrate the power of learning to change lives, and to save them.

When Doris Jong began her nursing career in Cameroon, she worked in adult oncology. What she saw changed her life.

‘I watched patients suffering and battling cancer, and I asked myself what role I could play to ease their suffering,’ Doris says.

Thanks to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), Doris is now training in paediatric oncology in Ghana, one of 15 nurses supported through this programme. These nurses are vital: they spot complications early, guide families, and provide compassionate care.

SNF is also enabling two paediatricians from sub-Saharan Africa to complete a two-year paediatric oncology fellowship in Ghana. These specialists are the cornerstone of improving survival rates for children. This initiative will help thousands of children each year access better diagnosis, treatment, and support.

We are deeply grateful to SNF for their commitment to transforming the lives of children with cancer. Together, we are working towards a world where every child has an equal chance to survive. Watch Doris share her story below. ”
