Elizabeth Ugwoma Awo-Ejeh: Listening to Your Body Can Save Your Life

Elizabeth Ugwoma Awo-Ejeh, Breast Cancer Survivor and Advocate, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Cancer doesn’t always come with pain. Sometimes it comes quietly, with a whisper you’re tempted to ignore.

The other day, I was speaking with a fellow survivor and her story left me thinking deeply. She said,

“It started with just a small lump. I almost ignored it because it wasn’t painful. I thought maybe it was nothing, just a normal body change. But something inside me pushed me to go for a check-up. That decision saved my life.”

Her words reminded me of how often we overlook the little things our bodies try to tell us. We live in a world where we are so busy chasing work, family, and responsibilities that sometimes we push our health aside. We convince ourselves that if there’s no pain, there’s no problem. But the truth is, cancer doesn’t always announce itself with pain. Sometimes it shows up as a lump, a change in shape, a discharge, or even a patch of skin that looks different.

Imagine if she had ignored that lump. Imagine if she had waited until it became painful. Her story could have been very different.

I’m sharing this today as an eye-opener. Please don’t ignore your body. Don’t assume you’re too young or too healthy. Don’t let fear or denial stop you from checking. Early detection and timely treatment save lives. Her story, just like mine, is proof.

This month is not just about awareness campaigns and wearing pink. It’s about real people, real stories, and real action. If you’re reading this, take it as your reminder to listen to your body, take that check seriously, and encourage someone else to do the same. You never know whose life you might save.”
