“A new study in Breast Cancer Research reports a significant disparity in death rates from ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) between non-Hispanic Black women and non-Hispanic White women from 2016 to 2021. The findings indicate that the death rate from DCIS was 87% higher among non-Hispanic Black women, with rates of 2.98 per 100,000 compared to 1.60 per 100,000 for non-Hispanic White women.
The authors state, “To reduce breast cancer mortality following DCIS diagnosis, identifying factors associated with fatal DCIS remains essential to optimizing the clinical management of DCIS, while also continuing efforts to address concerns about the overtreatment of low-risk DCIS.’ ”
