Douglas Flora: Incredibly inspiring book for anyone who cares about patient experience

“As many of you know, I love to catch up on reading during vacation. Unfortunately, I’m injured right now, so my hiking trip to Norway hasn’t included any hiking. Instead, I’m working my way through the 1,300 pages of Shogun today, lol.
Yesterday, I finished a book that was incredibly inspiring: Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. This book should be required reading for anyone who cares about patient experience.
Guidara shares numerous insights from his journey building the best restaurant in the world, many of which hospitals and practices could greatly benefit from. Here are a few quotes that resonated with me, sent this morning from the beautiful Lofoten Islands:
“Let your energy impact the people you are talking to, as opposed to the other way around.”
“All it takes for something extraordinary to happen is one person with enthusiasm.”
“The best way to respect and reward the A players on your team is to surround them with other A players. This is how you attract more A players.”
In my role, I am dedicated to supporting and building an A team of providers, leaders, and team members at St. Elizabeth Healthcare and St. Elizabeth Physicians.
Some of this involves extensive travel to showcase how special our organization is. We don’t always tell our story as well as we should. I’m trying to help change that.
I’m going to recharge here for a week and then hit the ground running. Our patients deserve Unreasonable Hospitality, and I will continue to apply “constant, gentle pressure” to help us achieve the excellence we know we are capable of.”
