Laura Vater: A physician who cares about their wellbeing is not “uncommitted” to medicine
Laura Vater, GI oncologist at IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on X:
“A physician who cares about their well-being is not ‘uncommitted’ to medicine.
They’ve seen doctors leave the field (and sadly, die by suicide). What you see is not disinterest, but survival. An attempt to protect their longevity in this field and the care they give to patients.
Recently I’ve seen a lot of narratives about how clinicians who advocate for their health and well-being (and that of others) are not committed to medicine.
Let’s put this myth to rest. To protect our longevity in this field (along with patient safety), we must be well.”
