Oncothon: Discussion with Professor Eric Small on mentorship and challenges in pediatric cancer treatment

Oncothon is a global telethon spanning 24 hours, dedicated to gathering donations for childhood cancer research. Professor Eric Small, President-Elect of ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology), will discuss the significance of mentorship in oncology and engage in conversation with Professor Tamamyan about the challenges in pediatric cancer development.

Speakers

Eric J. Small is a distinguished medical oncologist specializing in urologic oncology, with a focus on prostate cancer. Presently, he serves as the Co-Leader of the UCSF Prostate Cancer Program and Deputy Director and Chief Scientific Officer at the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Small has been elected as ASCO president for the term spanning 2025 to 2026. He is an active member of the ASCO Board of Directors and leads four External Advisory Boards for other NCI-Designated Cancer Centers.

Dr. Small’s impact in the field of prostate cancer is profound, evidenced by his extensive publication record of over 430 peer-reviewed articles. His research primarily focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying resistance to systemic therapy in advanced prostate cancer.

Apart from medicine, Dr. Small has diverse interests. He discovered a passion for baking during the COVID-19 quarantine, finding joy in creating bread, pastries, and cookies. He often bakes bread on Sunday mornings. Dr. Small is a devoted cat lover, sharing his home with several feline companions.

Gevorg Tamamyan

Gevorg Tamamyan is the Editor-in-chief of OncoDaily, Head of the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Armenia, Chairman and Professor of the Department of Hematology and Pediatric Oncology at Yerevan State Medical University, CEO of the Immune Oncology Research Institute, President-Elect of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean (POEM) Group. He is also the Adviser to the Rector of YSMU and to the Director of the Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center. He is a Co-Founder and Board Member of the Armenian Association of Hematology and Oncology, City of Smile Charitable Foundation, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Institute of Cancer and Crisis, the Former President of the Harvard Club of Armenia.

Dr. Tamamyan is the Past-Chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) IDEA Steering Group and International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) PODC Supportive care WG, Ambassador of the Society of Hematologic Oncology. He was selected for the ASCO Leadership Development Program and currently is a member of the ASCO International Committee. He is a recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, among them the ASCO IDEA and LIFe Awards, 40 under 40 in Cancer Award, he was recognized as a Young Leader of the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC) and Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).
