“Honoring a Life of Compassion and Impact
Few figures have transformed healthcare in Africa as profoundly as Dr. Anne Merriman.
Founder of Hospice Africa Uganda, Dr. Merriman dedicated her life to ensuring dignity, compassion, and access to pain relief for patients across the continent. Her pioneering introduction of affordable oral morphine brought relief to thousands suffering from HIV/ AIDS and cancer, reshaping palliative care in Uganda and beyond.
Through training programs, advocacy, and the establishment of the Institute of Hospice & Palliative Care in Africa, she empowered healthcare professionals from 37 African countries, ensuring that her vision will endure for generations.
Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 and recognized with an MBE, Dr. Merriman’s work was never about accolades—it was about people.
She passed away in Kampala at the age of 90, leaving behind not only her family and colleagues but also a continent profoundly changed by her compassion.
