Jasmin Hundal: The Future of Cancer Fitness Assessment with Wearable Technology
Jasmin Hundal, Chair of Hematology-Oncology Research Fellowship Working Group at Cleveland Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“For over 40 years, we have relied on the ECOG Performance Status to inform cancer treatment decisions and determine clinical trial eligibility. But ECOG PS is subjective and influenced by who is assessing it, when, and under what circumstances. In the era of precision medicine, we need objective, continuous, and patient-centered measures of fitness that reflect the lived experience of patients, not just a single number on a scale.
That’s why I found the recent editorial by Dr. Joseph McCollom, and the companion study by Ruiz et al. Ravi B. Parikh so compelling. Their work introduces the Objective Performance Status, derived from wearable accelerometer data, as a potential next step forward.
The implications are significant: integrating wearable data could refine treatment decisions, enhance trial eligibility assessments, and even expand the use of decentralized trial designs. Challenges like adherence, data quality, and privacy remain but the opportunity is clear.
As oncologists, the future lies at the intersection of oncology, digital health, and lifestyle medicine. Wearables won’t replace our judgment, but they can enhance it, reduce bias, and create more equitable access to life-saving therapies and trials.”
