Christopher Clinton Conway: The Hallmark of Good Nonprofit Leadership – Planning Your Own Transition
Christopher Clinton Conway, Chief Executive Officer and Board Executive Committee at Tower Cancer Research Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Hallmark of Good Nonprofit Leadership: Planning Your Own Transition
In nonprofit leadership, we often measure success by programs launched, funds raised, or lives touched. But one of the greatest hallmarks of leadership is less visible: preparing for your own transition.
At Tower Cancer Research Foundation, I was proud to help strengthen the organization’s development, expand its community of supporters, and deepen its impact. Yet one of my proudest accomplishments came not during my tenure, but at the moment of departure—leaving Tower Cancer with strong new leadership in place.
A well-planned transition is a gift to the mission. It signals to donors, staff, and partners that the organization’s future is secure and its work will thrive beyond any one individual. Instead of scrambling or losing momentum, is positioned for continued success under its next generation of leaders.
True leadership is not about holding on—it’s about ensuring stability, continuity, and growth for the cause you serve. Planning your own transition is an act of stewardship and, ultimately, of faith: faith that the mission endures, that the people will carry it forward, and that your role was to help set the stage for even greater impact.”
