Global Summit on War and Cancer: Mulugeta Yimer’s speech on Ethiopia’s experience with the impact of conflict on childhood cancer care
The 1st Global Summit on War and Cancer took place on 14 – 16 December 2023. It was organized by the Institute of Cancer and Crisis and OncoDaily. Renowned healthcare specialists from all over the world came together to discuss cancer issues at the time of war.
We were honored to have Mulugeta Yimer, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Gondar School of Medicine, Ethiopia, as a speaker during the summit where he discussed the impact of conflict and political instability on childhood cancer care sharing his experience from Ethiopia.
Dr. Yimer gave insights on the background of pediatric oncology practice in Ethiopia, its battle with war in the settings of lost psychosocial support and diversion of resources. Dr. Yimer ended his speech discussing the impact of war on pediatric oncology training.
Mulugeta Ayalew Yimer is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health, a clinician, researcher, and educator at the University of Gondar, Ethiopia. He is the Director of the School of Medicine at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Gondar and is a practicing pediatrician at the University of Gondar Hospital. He is also the chair of the University of Gondar Ethical Review Board for the school of medicine.
