Aakash Desai: JTO SUPE_R Trial Sheds Light on Surveillance Imaging for Stage IA-IIIC NSCLC
Aakash Desai, Associate Director of Phase 1 and Precision Oncology Program at UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared on LinkedIn about a recent paper by Kasper Foged Guldbrandsen et al. published on JTO:
“International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer JTO SUPE_R trial sheds light on surveillance imaging for Stage IA-IIIC NSCLC
In this multicenter randomized trial (stage IA–IIIC NSCLC), patients were followed with either contrast-enhanced CT or [18F]FDG PET/CT after curative-intent treatment.
Key findings:
- Recurrence rate: ~22% in both arms
- Curative salvage possible in 48% of recurrences — identical between PET and CT
- PET detected more scheduled recurrences (90% vs 77%)
- No significant difference in TTR (HR 1.12) or OS (HR 0.97)
Bottom line: Routine PET/CT surveillance didn’t improve curative salvage, time to recurrence, or survival over standard contrast CT!”
