Dora Vallejo: My Path to Australia Through the Global Talent Program
Dora Vallejo, Senior Medical Monitor/ Clinical Research Physician at Avance Clinical, shared a post on LinkedIn by The Australian Academy of Science adding:
“From Setback to Opportunity: My Path to Australia Through the Global Talent Program
After completing my PhD, I had a clear vision for the next step in my academic journey: a postdoctoral position at Harvard Medical School in the United States. Like many researchers worldwide, I saw the US as a place where I could continue pushing the boundaries of cancer research and connect with leaders in the field.
However, during 2020–2021, the global landscape shifted. The United States suspended many J1 visas, including mine. It was a moment of uncertainty not just for me, but for countless international scholars caught in similar limbo.
In that moment of disruption, I looked for a new path forward. Staying in Australia, where I had completed my PhD, became my focus. The Global Talent Visa Program (GTVP) emerged as my only viable option to remain and continue my work. It wasn’t easy—this program is highly competitive and demands strong evidence of international recognition, a track record of achievements, and alignment with Australia’s priority sectors.
If you’re a cancer researcher dreaming of continuing your work in a supportive, dynamic, and globally connected environment, Australia welcomes global talent. The Global Talent Program is an incredible opportunity—but it does require preparation and persistence.
If you’re passionate about making a difference in cancer research and are looking to migrate, don’t overlook Australia. Feel free to reach out if you’re navigating this path—I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel. But I also know it’s worth it.”
