Debanjan Kundu: I am Privileged to Have Visited This Centuries-Old Hospital as an AROI WB Young Oncology Fellow

Debanjan Kundu, Clinical and Radiation Oncologist at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, shared on LinkedIn:

” ‘Now gentlemen, I want to found a hospital for the treatment of cancer, and for the study of the disease, for at the present time we know absolutely nothing about it.’
– William Marsden, at a board meeting on 10 February 1851

What this led to… is the founding of the world’s first ever cancer hospital which opened its doors on Fulham Road, Chelsea in 1862.

I am humbled and privileged to have visited this centuries-old hospital as an AROI WB Young Oncology Fellow

As I write this on August 1, 2025… today marks 16 completed years of my voyage along the by-lanes of medical sciences. It is indeed hard to believe that so many years have flown by in the quest for knowledge, in perseverance for clinical proficiency.

My learnings and experience at Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust Hospitals, in the world-renowned Neuro-Oncology Disease Management Group with Dr. Liam Welsh, are something I will always cherish. The exposure to holistic multidisciplinary care, cutting-edge clinical oncology practices, teamwork, and depth of research has broadened my perspective as an oncologist. This incredible opportunity remains a transformative chapter in my journey as a clinical oncologist.

My heartfelt gratitude goes to my mentors and colleagues at Royal Marsden who generously shared their expertise and inspired me every day.

I am immensely thankful to the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (and especially our West Bengal Chapter) for their unwavering support to young oncology professionals.

I am indebted to my colleagues and teachers at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute for the huge support.

I am forever grateful to my wife, my parents, and my family members for all the sacrifices that made this possible.”
