Sendurai Mani: From Student to Speaker – My Journey Back to IISc
Sendurai Mani, Professor of Medicine at Brown University, shared on LinkedIn:
“From Student to Speaker: My Journey Back to IISc
It was a true pleasure to return to my alma mater, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and deliver a presentation to brilliant graduate students and distinguished faculty, including my doctoral advisor, Prof. G. Padmanabhan, from the Department of Biochemistry and the Division of Biological Sciences.
A heartfelt thank you to Prof. P N Rangarajan for inviting me. Engaging with such bright minds—and answering their thoughtful, challenging questions—was both humbling and inspiring.
Being back reminded me of my own journey into this premier institution. Out of nearly 2,000 students who took the entrance exam, only 25 were ultimately selected for the PhD program, after two rigorous rounds of interviews.
At IISc, we were trained to master all areas of biological sciences, not just the narrow scope of our specific research interests. While demanding at the time, this holistic education was one of the most transformative experiences of my life—broadening my understanding of science and shaping the researcher I am today.
Thank you, IISc, and to all the professors who helped forge that path.”
