Arif Kamal: Suits and Sneakers Week is the annual week-long recognition of the need to end cancer as we know it
Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer at American Cancer Society, posted on LinkedIn:
“Suits and Sneakers Week is the annual week-long recognition of the need to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Both by recognizing the power in cancer prevention and early detection, and the honoring of those going through a cancer journey or whose journeys have changed or ended.
A partnership between American Cancer Society and National Association of Basketball Coaches, seeing coaches wear a sharp suit and some bright white sneakers is a powerful reminder that while cancer mortality has reduced by 33% since 1991, with over 2M persons projected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2024, there’s still much work that needs to be done.
As a Duke oncologist and faculty member, and proud decade-long mens basketball season ticket holder, it was great to see Coach Jon Scheyer don a crisp suit and sharp sneaks while coaching the Duke University Blue Devils to a nail-biting win versus Clemson.
Regardless of the score, we all win when passionate people with large platforms like Coach Scheyer bring attention to this disease, which in some way touches us all.”
