“I’m very excited to share that our group’s study is now published in BMC Cancer, highlighting BDNF and inflammatory cytokines as predictors of cognitive impairment, also known as ‘chemobrain’, among adolescent and young adult cancer patients (AYAC) receiving chemotherapy.
We quantified plasma biomarkers and collected self-reported and objective cognitive outcomes over the course of 1 year, identifying biomarker-cognition associations that were unique to AYAC such as elevated IL-6 and lower BDNF in patients experiencing cognitive decline. Notably, several of these associations remained post-chemotherapy, indicating the long-lasting impact of BDNF and inflammatory cytokine dysregulation on cognitive outcomes among AYAC.
Our work contributes to the growing evidence of the role of inflammation and BDNF in chemobrain, highlighting potential targets for much-needed interventions in this patient population.”
