Arya Roy: International Medical Graduates Representation at International Oncology Conference Meetings

Arya Roy, Hematology-Oncology Fellow at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on X:

“Proud to share our publication in JCO Oncology Practice. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are underrepresented in invited faculty roles at ASCO Annual Meetings, despite their contributions to original research.
Study overview: We analyzed the presentation data from ASCO22 and ASCO23 Annual Meetings. Speakers categorized as
  •  American Medical Graduates (AMGs)
  •  International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
  •  Non-US-based
  •  Non-MD
Among invited faculty talks:
61% by AMGs
17% by non-US based speakers
14% by IMGs.

Arya Roy

Most invited faculty were professors:
– 53% of non-US-bases speakers
– 43% of IMGs
– 36% of AMGs
Suggests IMGs and non-US-based faculty may need to reach higher academic ranks to get invited roles.

Research output vs recognition:
Compared to AMGs, IMGs contributed a higher proportion of primary research and had lower proportion of invited faculty roles!
– AMGs: 30% research | 70% invoted roles
– IMGs: 41% research | 59% invited roles
Key analysis:
Compared to AMGs, IMGs were significantly less likely to be invited faculty relative to their first-author contributions:
aOR = 0.69, p = 0.006
This difference was not significant when comparing last-author contributions
aOR = 0.91, p = 0.4
Summary:
Despite meaningful research contributions, IMGs are underrepresented in invited faculty roles at oncology conferences.”
