Hendrik Messal Launches His Independent Research Group at the Netherlands Cancer Institute
The Netherlands Cancer Institute shared a post on LinkedIn:
“How do tumors arise within the context of their tissue environment?
That is the central question driving Hendrik Messal, who on September 1st launches his independent research group at the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
After completing his PhD in London, where he developed techniques to make organs transparent for 3D imaging, Hendrik joined the lab of Jacco van Rheenen in 2019. Over the past years, he has explored how tissues adapt during wound healing and cancer, using advanced imaging and genetic tools to study cell behavior in real time.
With his new lab, Hendrik aims to:
– understand how the environment shapes cell behavior
– integrate different layers of biology, from microscopy and genetics to data science
– unravel why some cells grow into tumors, and why in certain places but not others
“Cancer is not only a disease, it is also a mirror of how normal biology goes wrong. By studying it, we gain fundamental insights into life itself.”
