Miriam Mutebi: Best of ASCO Africa plus Launch of the AORTIC-ASCO International Cancer Research Scholars Program
Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“All roads lead to Addis! I’m thrilled to invite our entire AORTIC- Africa family, clinicians, researchers, policymakers and partners from across Africa, to join us this week for a milestone gathering:
Best of ASCO Africa plus Launch of the AORTIC-ASCO International Cancer Research Scholars Program
Why does this meeting matter?
For too long, Africa’s cancer burden has risen faster than our workforce and systems can keep up. Traditional training pipelines alone cannot close the gap in time. And while innovations and technologies exist to bridge this, access remains patchy, and too often unaffordable and unscalable, with no integration into existing systems. Our patients still pay 3–4 times more for the same medicines compared to peers in other similar countries globally. This has to change.
This year’s Best of ASCO Africa, hosted in Addis, is more than just a science-sharing event. It’s a practical, pragmatic conversation about how we, as Africa’s oncology community, can:
- Translate cutting-edge science into real practice
- Collectively negotiate for affordable therapies and technologies
- Reimagine care delivery with local context in mind
- Turn good pilots into sustainable solutions that don’t die on the continent
To top it off, we are proud to launch our International Cancer Research Scholars Training Program, co-hosted with American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), to strengthen local research capacity and mentorship, ensuring African researchers can answer Africa’s questions, in Africa’s settings.
We are deeply grateful to our Ethiopian hosts for the warm hospitality and local coordination.
Now’s the time to secure your spot and be part of shaping a future where quality cancer care is accessible, affordable, and sustainable for every African patient.”
