Lucjan Wyrwicz: 100 Years Ago, Maria Sklodowska-Curie Initiated the Construction of Our Institute in Warsaw

Lucjan Wyrwicz, Head of Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy at Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“100 years ago, on June 7th, 1925, Maria Sklodowska-Curie, in the presence of the President of Poland, Stanisław Wojciechowski, initiated the construction of Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology in Warsaw (called that time Instytut Radowy/Radium Institute – photo from NAC).
This centrally located small hospital is still an active place with a few hundred patients being treated here daily. We are still diagnosing and treating our patients in this building, which was built by the national collection. Patients are operated on, undergo radiotherapy, and receive chemotherapy. 98% of them are being treated in a day clinic in an outpatient manner. Half of the Polish pediatric patients who need radiotherapy are brought for their treatment to this place, funded by Maria Curie.
Although our Institute is planning to build its third venue (the second was built in the 1980s), I hope we will be able to keep the memory of that place for minimum the next 100 years, in the best way as it could be. By consulting the patients, providing them with essential treatment, and the most comprehensive care.
More info about our anniversary (in Polish).”
