Gustavo Viani: PBI versus WBI for early-stage breast cancer
Gustavo Viani, Professor of Radiation Oncology at Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of Sao Paulo, recently posted on X/Twitter:
“PBI versus WBI for early-stage breast cancer:
– Metanalysis: 17,234 patients from 14 RCTs and 6 observational
– Primary endpoints: IBR, cosmetics, and AEs
Findings:
– 5-year IBR: PBI = WBI (RR 1.34, 95% CI 0.83—2.18)
– 10-year IBR: PBI = WBI (RR 1.29, 95% CI 0.87—1.91)
– Cosmesis: Insufficient evidence
– Acute AEs: Decreased in PBI compared to WBI
– Late AEs: No significant difference
– IORT: Increased IBR with IORT compared to WBI at 5, 10, >10 years.”
