Gilberto Lopes Highlights Lack of Diversity Among ASCO Oral Presenters
Gilberto Lopes, Medical Director for International Programs and Associate Director at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on X:
“Who’s presenting at ASCO?
From 2021–2024, most oral presenters were mid-to-late career oncologists from US academic centers, especially in the Northeast.
Early-career speakers and those from outside the US were less common—none from African institutions.
There’s room to broaden the voices shaping oncology’s future.”
Gilberto Lopes shared data on speaker representation at ASCO, noting a predominance of senior US-based oncologists and underrepresentation of early-career professionals and African institutions.
