Samira Farouk Highlights the Silent Crisis of Chronic Kidney Disease in America – Mount Sinai Department of Medicine
Mount Sinai Department of Medicine shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Mount Sinai’s Samira Farouk, MD, joins other nephrologists to discuss chronic kidney disease (CKD) in episode 1 of The State of Kidney Disease in America, highlighting the silent and often undetected nature of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which affects millions – up to 90% of whom are unaware they have it.
CKD progresses from mild to severe stages, ultimately requiring dialysis or transplant when kidney function drops below 15%. It disproportionately impacts older adults, individuals with diabetes or hypertension, and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, particularly Black Americans – primarily due to disparities in healthcare access and social determinants of health.
The healthcare system’s reactive rather than preventive approach often results in emergency dialysis without proper education or early nephrology referrals. The episode calls for increased public awareness, better screening, early intervention, and empowered patient-provider conversations to help prevent progression and ultimately improve outcomes and equity in kidney care.”
