Zacharoula Sidiropoulou Calls for Global Investment in Access to Cancer Surgery in LMICs

Zacharoula Sidiropoulou, Senior Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist at Hospital São Francisco Xavier, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Stepping out the ESMO Breast 2025 and waiting for the opening of WHA78.
Despite remarkable advances in cancer treatment, a fundamental gap persists:
lack of access to cancer surgery in low and middle-income countries.
The reality is stark:
5 billion people worldwide lack access to safe, affordable surgical care when needed.
Cancer causes approximately 10 million deaths annually, with higher mortality rates in regions with limited surgical access.
Surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment for most solid tumors
In many low-income countries, fewer than 20% of cancer patients get the surgery they need
Without investing in surgical capacity, low and middle-income countries will experience losses estimated at $12.3 trillion in economic productivity by 2030.
Investing in cancer surgical systems is not just humanitarian – it’s economically sound. Studies show significant returns on investment through lives saved and productivity preserved.
As we advance global cancer control efforts, we must prioritize surgical capacity-building alongside other treatment modalities.
Basic cancer operations should be accessible to everyone who needs them, regardless of where they live.
Anyone’s health anywhere is everyone’s health everywhere.”
