Miriam Mutebi Highlights Christian Ntizimira’s Impact on African Palliative Cancer Care

Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on Linkedin:

“Some heroes don’t wear capes. They carry clipboards, hold hands, and walk alongside patients when medicine has done all it can.
I first met Dr. Christian Ntizimira as part of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Young Leaders programme. Back then, he was already passionate about reshaping how Africa approached palliative care.
Today, as not-so-young leaders (depending on who you ask), it’s humbling to witness how far he’s come and how much he’s shifted the paradigm.
From founding the ACREOL Center in Rwanda to championing a culturally-rooted model of care that views death not as failure, but as a dignified transition, Christian has redefined palliative care.
He introduced the ‘Safari’ concept, treating each patient’s journey and their community’s response like a meaningful voyage, grounded in respect, memory, and cultural context. In many African traditions, death is not just an end, it’s a celebration. Christian reminds us of that humanity.
He’s a ripple maker. And though I can’t mention everyone in a single post, we know there are many more across the continent quietly transforming cancer care in their communities.
Know a local hero in cancer care? A nurse, researcher, community worker, or doctor making a difference?
Feel free to DM me their name. Let’s spotlight the unsung champions keeping the flame of hope alive.”
