Kimryn Rathmell: Beyond the Headlines – The Real Impact of Early Onset Cancer

Kimryn Rathmell, CEO of Ohio State’s James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, posted on LinkedIn:

“Early onset cancer is on the rise. This is a signal that is important to pay attention to,
1) because it signals a health problem that we aren’t able to control effectively yet, and
2) because this is a signal that is teaching us about cancer in general.
The first thing we need is data – who is this impacting, where, when, and how. A powerful new study (linked below) has compiled the data from across the U.S. cancer landscape, finding 14 cancers rising in younger age groups. Some are notably rising in younger ages, and others are rising across the lifespan.
The next thing we need to do is have this issue out in the open so we can talk about it, develop plans to understand and approach it, and to be sure our tactics are meeting the needs of the community.
