Partha Basu: Bangladesh sets an example among the LMICs

Partha Basu, Head of the Early Detection, Prevention and Infections Branch at IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization, shared the following post on LinkedIn:

“Bangladesh successfully implements an electronic health information system using DHIS2 tracker to manage and evaluate the National cervical screening programme and sets an example among the LMICs. The upgraded e-HIS collects individual level data and has useful functionalities like sending SMS reminders.

Also, the system facilitates data linkage between community clinics, screening centers, and colposcopy clinics using a unique national identifier. Till April 2024, 14,213 community clinics (out of total 15,564 in the country) were using the e-HIS to register women for VIA. To learn more about this great initiative check our latest publication in the BMC Public Health.”

This post by Dr. Partha Basu highlights a major milestone in digital health and cancer prevention. Bangladesh’s adoption of the DHIS2 tracker to power its national cervical cancer screening program now connects over 14,000 community clinics, screening centers, and colposcopy units through a unified, individualized health information system.

Key features include SMS reminders for patients, real-time data entry, and streamlined care coordination via a unique national identifier. This system, already in use across 91% of the country’s community clinics, is a leading model for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) aiming to scale up cervical screening using digital tools.
