Douglas Flora: The impact of community Lung Cancer Screening Program at St. Elizabeth Healthcare

Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare and ACCC President-Elect, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Lung Cancer Screening works! Incredible Results from Our Community Program.

I wanted to share more updates about the life-saving impact our Lung Cancer Screening Program is having right here at our community hospital and cancer center. The data speaks for itself – early detection is making a profound difference.

Key Highlights:

  • Effective Detection: We’re identifying one lung cancer for every 25 unique patients screened with a quick, painless Low-Dose CT (LDCT) scan.

Leading the Way:

  • We recently surpassed 50,000 total LDCT lung screenings since our program began!
  • We hit the milestone of our 500th Stage I cancer found by screening this past April!
  • 73.9% were found in early stages (I & II).

In 2024 alone, we found 151 lung cancers, with 72.2% (109) in Stage I – each representing a potential life saved!

Changing the Narrative: Since 2022, our health system has seen more early-stage than late-stage lung cancers overall, a significant shift driven by screening and proactive nodule management.

In 2024, we screened 51.7% of our eligible patients, which is significantly higher than the national rate of around 16%. We’re actively working to reach even more.

We are incredibly proud of our dedicated screening team and our Population Health Support Services (PHSS), which ensure that patients receive the necessary screenings. This is community healthcare making a tangible difference!”
