Deepak Gupta: New Organ at Risk for SBRT coming soon
Deepak Gupta, Associate Director at Medanta Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“New OAR for SBRT coming soon in …..
With years of experience we understand that few Organ at Risk(OAR) are more critical for SBRT and delineation is the key.
We published previously how to delineate DUODENUM for SBRT in upper GI malignancies and Urethra for prostate cancer in The British Institute of Radiology. With more experience in lung sbrt we learn phrenic nerve is also a critical OAR especially of ultracental lung tumour in Practical Radiation Oncology American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO)
Delineation of organs at risk (OARs) in SBRT is more complex and critical than in conventional radiotherapy, due to the high doses per fraction and steep dose gradients. Here’s a breakdown of how complicated it can be and why:
Why OAR Delineation in SBRT is Complex:
1. High Precision Required:
SBRT delivers large doses with millimetric precision.
Even a small error in OAR contouring can result in significant toxicity.”
