Max Think Tank: A forum to address real-world barriers to accessing treatment – The Max Foundation

The Max Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn:

“One way we seek to learn and expand our knowledge is through our Max Think Tank, a forum where individual experts and our partners help us think through key strategic questions, and strategize how best to address real-world barriers to accessing treatment.

At our second annual in-person Think Tank meeting, we gathered feedback that will enhance our efforts in measuring our impact on patients and strengthening health system.

We started the day with insights from two of our partner physicians: Dr. Patricia Silva, a retired hematologist from Maputo Central Hospital in Mozambique, and Dr. Arun Shahi, a medical oncologist from Patan Hospital in Nepal. Both shared the challenges and opportunities of delivering cancer care in low-resource settings.

Dr. Silva highlighted the reality of treating cancer in Mozambique, where there are only four hematologists for a population of 33 million.

Dr. Shahi shared that in Nepal, 40 people die of cancer every day. Many view a diagnosis as a death sentence and are reluctant to spend money on treatment, fearing it will leave their families economically devastated.

However, he reminded us, “Despite the barriers, we believe that it is both possible and worth it to treat cancer patients!

Cancer doesn’t discriminate. But the world does. Depending on where you live, your chances of surviving cancer can vary dramatically.”

A huge “thanks” goes to Alison Roos, Amanda Schwartz, Carlo Nalin, Dan Milner, David Essayan, Eunice OREKHA, Isabelle Lindenmayer, Julie Jenson, Kari Edwards, Paul Aliu, Rebecca Begley, Rod Padua, Staci J Kearney and everyone who spent the day helping us enhance our evidence generation strategy.

Together, we can eliminate healthcare disparities and provide treatment access to people living with cancer in low- and middle-income countries.”
