Thomas Hofmarcher: Launch of the 2025 IHE Comparator Report on Cancer in Europe
Thomas Hofmarcher, Research Director at IHE – The Swedish Institute for Health Economics, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Launch of the 2025 IHE Comparator Report on Cancer in Europe.
Our flagship report analyzes and compares the cancer situation in Europe. It provides a comprehensive view of the development of cancer between 1995 and 2023. It highlights differences between countries in terms of the disease burden, costs, and patient access to new cancer medicines and molecular diagnostics.
It also describes the advances in the medical field and discusses policy issues of how to bridge inequalities in access to medicines across countries.
Bengt Jönsson and Nils Wilking (Karolinska Institute) founded this report series 20 years ago. Since then, it has become part of IHE’s legacy and a European reference for data and statistics on cancer. The two key messages of the 2025 report are:
Investments in cancer care are starting to pay off
- More and more patients survive the disease
- Cancer deaths in Europe have started to stabilize
- Almost 200 new cancer medicines have been approved since 1995
- Indirect costs of cancer declined by €15 billion from 1995 to 2023
Disparities in access to cancer medicines are getting smaller across European countries
- The gap between the two highest- and lowest-uptake countries of new medicines shrank from a 5.3-fold difference in 2018 to a 3.3-fold difference in 2023
- Health spending on cancer care and medicines has become more similar
I’m very grateful for the opportunity to present the report together with Nils Wilking at the event ‘Cancer Care 2030: From Policy Ambition to Impact’ hosted by EFPIA – European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations in Brussels!
