Michelle Sholzberg: Dr. Tom DeLoughery is a hematology hero
Michelle Sholzberg, Medical Director of the Coagulation Laboratory at St. Michael’s hospital, shared a post by
Ming Y Lim, Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies at the University of Utah, on Twitter, adding the following:
“Dr. Tom DeLoughery is a hematology hero. Thank you for your inspiring and impactful advocacy. ”
Quoting Ming Y Lim:
“Amazing advocacy talk by Tom DeLoughery on iron deficiency! The figure below shows the lower limit of normal for women. Single-digit ferritin levels ARE TOO LOW! ASHKudos to labs that have a reasonably physiologic reference range for women!
Love the quote by Dr Michael Auerbach!
Intramuscular iron should not be given to anyone in any situation to anyone on this planet!
So true! Premedication is associated with increased risk of adverse events, but it’s always the iron infusion that gets blamed!
Premedication prior to IV iron is usually unnecessary and was a 2022 The American Society of Hematology Choosing Wisely project!
Dr. Jacquelyn Powers now discussing the use of IV iron in pediatrics and highlights another The American Society of Hematology 2021 Choosing Wisely Champion focusing on the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Choosing Wisely list on avoiding transfusion in asymptomatic patients with iron deficiency anemia!”
