“Introducing AIEOP’S 2024-2027 Working Group Coordinators.
- Coordinator: Simone Cesaro
- Working Group: Infections and Supportive Therapies
- Position: Director, Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Ospedale Donna Bambino, Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Integrata Verona
Tell us about your working group?
‘The working group’s main responsibilities include Education, Training and Research on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of complications related to the treatment of tumors and other serious non-tumor hematological diseases.
Among these, infections are the most frequent complication in immunocompromised patients. Optimal management of infections requires continuous updating of the epidemiology of the prevalent germs, the ability to implement a timely diagnosis and to have up-to-date therapeutic knowledge.
Additionally, treatment of nausea and vomiting, drug toxicity, management of the central venous catheter, interaction with pets and some aspects of complementary medicine.
This broad field of interests has been developed in collaboration with other working groups (Leukemia, Transplant, Nursing, Psychology) and with other important Italian and European scientific organizations.’
Why is this working group so important?
‘The management of complications related to the underlying disease and treatment (chemotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplant, CAR T) represents the central aspect of the daily work of a pediatric hematologist that requires specific knowledge and training.
Acquiring skills in this field is essential to implement specialized oncological treatments and to be able to modulate treatment choices on the characteristics of the patient.’
What areas of research are you most passionate about?
‘The prevention, diagnosis and treatment of serious infections in immunocompromised patients represents an area of continuous and fascinating clinical research. Great progress has been made to date and more is destined to come in the coming years.
The aspiration of this WG is to continue to play a leading role in this matter within AIEOP and to contribute to the evolution of knowledge in this very specific pediatric field.’
What inspires you?
‘Coordinating a work group requires commitment and above all specific motivation. Gandhi said that ‘satisfaction lies in effort, not in achievement’. Working in a group is also a great opportunity for everyone, because ‘the strength of a team is in its members, the strength of each member is in the team’.”
