Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Turning Hope into Survival for Childhood Cancer
Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This Learning Tuesday, together with me today, I have Hana Chaar Choueib and Eric Bouffet to shed more light to us on childhood cancer.
Every year, approximately 300,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer, but in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), survival rates can be as low as 20-30% compared to over 80% in high-income countries.
The lack of resources, knowledge on the importance of early detection, and treatment options leaves many children without hope. To change this, we need increased funding and support for childhood cancer. With more investment, we can improve outcomes, ensure access to life-saving treatments, and give every child the chance to survive and thrive.
Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) has been at the forefront of the fight against childhood cancer in low- and middle-income countries, driving global initiatives, building healthcare capacity, and uniting partners worldwide.
For years, we have working tirelessly to ensure no child is left behind, and today, we continue to turn hope into survival, striving for a future where every child has access to life-saving care.”
