Paola Tello Valverde: The significance of hyperthermia in postoperative re-irradiation for patients with locally recurrent breast cancer
Paola Tello Valverde, Co-founder of Jump18-Aruba Childhood Obesity Prevention Program, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics:
“I am delighted to share that we have reached a significant milestone.
One of my most important investigations, ‘The probability of locoregional control in patients with locoregional recurrent breast cancer treated with postoperative re-irradiation and hyperthermia (RADHY): A continuous thermal dose-effect relationship’, has been recently published in the esteemed IJROBP The Red Journal.
The study establishes a consistent thermal dose-effect relationship, offering valuable insights into the effectiveness of this treatment approach for patients who underwent postoperative re-irradiation combined with hyperthermia.
A significant relationship was observed between an increased thermal dose and an improved locoregional control, varying from ~44% to -98% at 5 years, underscoring the importance of ensuring adequate thermal dose.
This finding reinforces the significance of hyperthermia in enhancing the potent sensitizing effect of postoperative re-irradiation for patients with locally recurrent breast cancer.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to all my co-authors Konstantinos Pateras, Akke Bakker, Polychronis Kostoulas, Willemijn Kolff, Petra Kok, Geertjan van Tienhoven, my promoter Ben Slotman and my co-promoter Hans Crezee. Thank you all so much for your support and collaboration.”
