Alique Topalian: Advocates urge Congress to prioritize the needs of children with cancer

Last year, the House of Representatives unanimously passed two bipartisan bills with important provisions related to pediatric drug development, clinical trials, and access to care.
Sadly the ‘Childhood Cancer Package’ did not make it over the finish line before the end of the last Congress.
That’s why last week advocates with the Alliance for Childhood Cancer went to the hill to tell Congress to prioritize the needs of children with cancer. I am so thankful the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) provided me with the opportunity to attend this meeting.
These bills ensure that children with cancer can get timely care which sometimes means going to another state for a specialist or a clinical trial. Red tape delays life saving treatment for children enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP. Other legislation extends research incentives for childhood cancer research to pharma companies.
We also ask Congress to protect Federal funding for childhood cancer research within the NIH as 80% of children rely on research institutions to provide life saving care as 50% of children are enrollees in clincal trials.
Additionally we asked to protect children on Medicaid which supports 1 in 3 newly diagnosed children and 37 million children (half of all children in the US).”
