Averil Power: The launch of Ireland’s first mobile lung screening unit invested by the Irish Cancer Society
Averil Power, Chief Executive Officer at Irish Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It’s great to be at the launch today of Ireland’s first mobile lung screening unit, made possible by a €4.9 million investment by the Irish Cancer Society.
Lung cancer kills more Irish people every year than any other cancer, primarily because it is diagnosed late when it is difficult to treat.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
When caught early, surgery may be the only treatment required and up to 9 in 10 people survive.
This pilot initiative by the Beaumont RCSI Cancer Centre and the Irish Cancer Society will give people the opportunity to have their lung cancer picked up early. We’re confident it will save lives among people from North Dublin and the North East who take part in the pilot.
And we’re hopeful that it will lead in time to a free national lung screening programme for everyone at high risk of lung cancer. Just as an initial investment of €1 million by the Irish Cancer Society led to Ireland’s national bowel screening programme.
This lifesaving initiative is funded entirely by donations. Thanks to everyone who has made it possible by supporting the Irish Cancer Society on Daffodil Day and throughout the year. Together we are saving lives and improving the lives of people affected by cancer in Ireland.”
