Marco Donia has been appointed Professor of Clinical Oncology at the University of Copenhagen
Marco Donia, Clinical Research Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen, shared a post on LinkedIn by CCIT-DK, adding:
“Deeply honored to be appointed Professor of Clinical Oncology at the University of Copenhagen. This recognition is not just a milestone, but a renewed source of motivation and support for my team and me to continue pushing the boundaries of cancer immunotherapy.
This journey has been shaped by the decisions and support of many people—mentors, colleagues, and collaborators—who believed in my potential and the importance of our work. A highly concentrated, non-exhaustive list of thanks includes:
- Ferdinando Nicoletti (University of Catania) – Early mentor in Italy.
- Inge Marie Svane – Mentor in Denmark.
- Özcan Met and Eva Ellebæk – Extraordinary colleagues.
- Colleagues at CCIT-DK – National Center for Cancer Immune Therapy of Denmark, Afdeling for Kræftbehandling, Herlev og Gentofte Hospital (especially Director Lisa Sengeløv), and the Københavns Universitet – University of Copenhagen – fostering an environment of innovation and scientific growth.
- The incredible team I have the privilege to lead: the TIL group (including past members)
- Patients, whose participation in clinical studies forms the cornerstone and purpose of our research.
- Foundations, including Lundbeckfonden/Lundbeck Foundation, Kræftens Bekæmpelse (Danish Cancer Society), Novo Nordisk Foundation, and several others, for their essential support.
- National and international colleagues, whose expertise and collaborations continue to shape our work and advance the field.
- Rikke Andersen, for her invaluable and continuous support.
- …and all those who cannot be mentioned here due to space constraints, but whose contributions have been fundamental.
Excited to move forward!”
Quoting CCIT-DK – National Center for Cancer Immune Therapy of Denmark’s post:
“Congratulations to Marco Donia, Chief Physician at the Afdeling for Kræftbehandling, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital (Department of Oncology) and Research Group Leader at CCIT-DK – National Center for Cancer Immune Therapy of Denmark, who has been appointed Professor of Clinical Oncology with a special focus on Immuno-Oncology at the University of Copenhagen, effective February 1st.
‘I am very pleased to receive this professorship, as it strengthens both my position, and the position of the research group I lead. It supports my goal of making a difference for as many cancer patients as possible,’ says Marco.
Despite remarkable advancements in cancer treatment over the years, one in three Danes will still be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. For Marco and his research team, the ambition is to generate clinically applicable knowledge that can enhance immunotherapy.
‘Over the past 10 years, cancer immunotherapy has developed tremendously, providing us with treatments that can cure some patients with advanced cancer,’ Marco explains.
‘However, not all patients benefit equally from current immunotherapies. Our goal is to better understand the interaction between the immune system and cancer, so we can refine our ability to manipulate the immune response.’
Marco is currently focused on the role of immune cells called lymphocytes, which can recognize cancer as foreign.
‘Lymphocytes can detect and eliminate cancer, but there are multiple subpopulations with distinct functions. We lack knowledge about which of these are most effective in curing patients. By studying this further, we aim to develop more potent immunotherapies that could work across different cancer types.’
This appointment marks an exciting step forward in the fight against cancer.
